Leading Minds of Berlin Science 2025
10.10.2025
Every year, an editorial team at Berlin’s Tagesspiegel selects 100 scientists whose work has had a significant influence on research in the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan region. The recognition is divided into several categories. In the "Swimming Against the Tide" category, Professor Ana Pombo from the Max Delbrück Center (MDC) and NeuroCure PI received special recognition.
Professor Ana Pombo leads the research group “Epigenetic Regulation and Chromatin Architecture” at the Berlin Institute for Medical Systems Biology of the Max Delbrück Center (MDC-BIMSB). She was recently honored with the Leibniz Prize, one of the most prestigious scientific awards in Germany, for her research.

Pombo has contributed fundamentally to our understanding of how the spatial organization of the genome regulates gene activity and thereby affects numerous biological processes. Her current work investigates how external factors can alter these three-dimensional genomic structures. Some of her innovative ideas initially met with skepticism, but she persevered and ultimately demonstrated the value of her approach through the strength of her research.
