Scientific Events

From February 17th to April 7th, 2022, QUEST and NeuroCure will offer a hands-on course in which participants will learn to identify common problems that affect transparency and reproducibility and work on implementing better practices in their own research.

Each class will begin with a seminar, where participants learn about problems with common practices and explore more transparent and reproducible alternatives. Seminars will be followed by workshops, where participants implement the skills discussed by applying them directly to their own research projects. After completing the course, participants will be able to apply the skills that they have learned and practiced to other research projects.

Classes will be held in English and will take place on Thursdays from 2:00 to 3:45 pm.

On October 5 and 6, the Einstein Center for Neurosciences Berlin (ECN) and Cluster of Excellence NeuroCure hosted the annual Berlin Neuroscience Meeting at the GLS Campus, a wonderful green oasis in the heart of Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg.

More than 250 participants attended the meeting and contributed to its diverse program. We are very happy about the tremendous interest and strong engagement on both days (Program Berlin Neuroscience Meeting 2023).

The meeting started with three satellite events: ECN PhD students organized a round table as an opportunity for different ECN PhD cohorts to meet and exchange ideas. NeuroCure had its annual Members’ Assembly together with members of its international Scientific Advisory Board. A special part of the conference was the kick-off meeting between the ECN and the Jerusalem Brain Community (JBC), an association of faculty and student researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. At this satellite event, participants introduced various projects and discussed potential future collaborations.

To stimulate networking and further discussions, participants gathered on both evenings for dinner and drinks, accompanied by a fantastic musical performance by ECN students on Thursday.

After two years of pandemics, this year we were finally able to meet in person for the Berlin Neuroscience Meeting. On October 13, 2022, Anne McKinney, from McGill University, held a keynote lecture, followed by a get-together with students and postdocs at the BCCN lecture hall. On October 14, 2022, students and scientists met at the Kaiserin-Friedrich-Haus. 

It was a great opportunity for sharing and exchanging ideas. In particular, new ECN PhD students had the chance to meet each other and other scientists and get an overview of the Berlin neuroscience landscape. 

For the second time, the ECN Open Innovation in Science Award was granted. Six PhD students pitched their ideas for projects that foster open and collaborative practices for the progression of scientific research. The winners will receive financial support of 5.000-10.000€, as well as expert training and coaching modules for further developing and implementing the projects.

Congratulations to the winners: Fiona O’Donovan (1st prize) and Linda Kokwaro and Helena Krüger (runner-ups)!

Finally, we celebrated the Medical Neurosciences Master during their graduation ceremony.

The Berlin Neuroscience Meeting took place on October 15, 2021. This was an opportunity to open the academic year and welcome the new ECN PhD cohort.

It was a great chance for ECN scientists and PhD students to share ideas and learn about current research projects.

The poster session and get-together provided an opportunity for academics, students, faculty, and researchers to display their work and discuss it.

This year, the Open Innovation in Science Award (OIS Award) was also presented for the first time. The OIS Award includes direct financial support of 5,000 EUR for selected OIS project ideas as well as expert training and coaching modules for the further development and implementation of projects that are innovative, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary.

The Berlin Neuroscience Meeting took place on Friday, October 13, 2017 in the CCO. At the event, the Einstein Center for Neurosciences (ECN) celebrated its first “birthday” together with its partner institutions. In addition to networking and exchanging scientific ideas, the meeting provided an opportunity to welcome the first Einstein PhD cohort and introduce the new PhD students to the Berlin neuroscience scene.

On Friday, May 12, 2017, clinical researchers and basic scientists from the Cluster visited the new neurosurgery operating rooms, the neurointensive care unit, and the emergency room in the recently renovated Charité highrise hospital building. The unique Stroke Emergency Mobile (STEMO), equipped with computed tomography (CT) and a small laboratory, was also on display. In the future, this state-of-the-art technology will be increasingly used in an interdisciplinary research approach to investigate mechanisms, acute and hyperacute diseases, and to develop new treatment options.

STEMO: The stroke emergency mobile brings imaging techniques (CT) directly to the patient.

• The Circuits club: talks focus on systems neuroscience and neighboring fields, such as neuroethology, neuroimaging, and connectomics.
• Neural mechanisms of psychedelic drug action: talks focus on the mechanisms of action at the molecular, cellular, circuit, and system levels that underlie the application of psychedelics in the treatment of psychiatric diseases.
• Spikes - bug or feature?: talks focus on  recent advances in understanding of spikes, from spike initiation to large-scale network dynamics.
• Stimulating brains - Connectomics and neuromodulation: talks focus on the treatment of brain disorders through brain stimulation therapies, with an emphasis on connectomic neuromodulation.
• A spotlight on cooperation: talks focus on cooperative behavior from an interdisciplinary perspective, covering topics such as the neural correlates of empathy, eusociality and group based decision making.

The CCO Networking Seminar is a series of events offering all CCO scientists and researchers the opportunity to share current projects and exchange ideas and expertise. Through a variety of talks ranging from PIs introducing their labs to methodological sessions, we’re coming together to promote more interaction and cooperation within CCO (and without). This is a chance to try out new ideas, present current projects, discuss the latest research results, and discover new methods and technical developments. 

At the moment, the seminar series is not taking place, but we will inform you with updates as soon as possible.
