Biochemistry Department Lecture Series - Prof. Tilman Grune (online)

Date: Tuesday, Oct 5th, at 12:00 pm

Subject: "Proteolysis and Protein Aggregation during Aging"

Guest: Tilman Grune, Director of the German Institute of Human Nutrition in Potsdam-Rehbrücke

Professor Grune’s work focuses on protein damage caused by free radicals and oxidants that are by-products of cellular metabolism. Normally, damaged proteins are degraded and, therefore, detoxified. Under pathological conditions or in advanced age, the degradation might become insufficient. In order to study the degradation mechanism of oxidized proteins, Professor Grune investigates the intracellular proteolytic systems. How nutrition contributes to the formation or degradation of damaged proteins is the central research topic of his team. In translational approaches, Professor Grune is searching for reliable biomarkers enabling the assessment of biological age, redox status and protein homeostasis.
