Meet the Scientist - "Would you take the blue or the red pill? Serotonin and brain function", with Dr. Prateep Beed

Ort: Humboldt Forum, Schloßplatz, 10178 Berlin

Führung: Meet the Scientist - wissenschaftlicher Vortrag in englischer Sprache:  "Would you take the blue or the red pill? Serotonin and brain function", with Dr. Prateep Beed
Serotonin is a key chemical for brain functions as it regulates mood, anxiety and happiness amongst others. Medicines which increase serotonin levels in the brain help to alleviate some of these conditions but also results in several unwanted side-effects. On the other hand there is a renaissance in psychedelic substances which also act via the serotonin system and holds promise to have therapeutic potential. Which brings up several research questions that are of general interest amongst scientists and the public - such as how is psilocybin different from classical anti-depressants or how does LSD helps in ego-dissolution?
We will together learn a bit more about these differences at our NeuroCure station and I would be happy to talk to you about my own research in this context.

Prateep Beed is a neuroscientist and works at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. He looks back on 15 years of professional experience. Besides working on neural circuits, he is interested in science communication. He enjoys explaining to the public how research is conducted in the neurosciences.

The entrance is free.
