'The Memory Tapestry: Weaving Insights Across Different Systems and Levels'

Student/Postdoc-Run Speaker Series (SPRSS)

On behalf of The Memory Tapestry: Weaving Insights Across Different Systems and Levels Group, Thomas McHugh from the RIKEN Center for Brain Science in Tokyo, Japan will give a talk titled "Familiarity and Flexibility in the Hippocampus" as part of the ongoing Student/Postdoc-Run Speaker Series (SPRSS).

Abstract:

The hippocampus plays a crucial role in forming episodic memory; the who, what, where memories that define our lives. To operate efficiently, the circuit must balance the competing demands of encoding novel or important stimuli, while maintaining the integrity of existing representations. I will introduce two ongoing projects that examine how non-cononical hippocampal outputs contribute to this balance, the first looking at a CA2 circuit that can modulate acetylcholine and the second, a projection to the nucleus accumbens involved in social flexibility.
