German Authorities

Before signing your contract, you need to register with the relevant German authorities. Please contact Kimberly Mason at the NeuroCure office beforehand to clear up any questions in advance.

1. Local registration office (Bürgeramt)

Register your address (Anmeldung)

To do this you need to bring your rental contract (Mietvertrag) and a statement from the building management confirming your rental (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung).

Regsiter to pay taxes

When you register your address, the Bürgeramt will automatically notify the financial authorities (Finanzamt). You will be assigned a tax ID number, which will be sent to you by post and should be given to the Charité as soon as possible. The Charité will withhold taxes according to the tax class assigned by the Finanzamt based on your income and marital/family status. If desired and subject to certain conditions, you may change your tax class at your local Finanzamt. Please contact Kimberly Mason with questions.

Apply for a police clearance certificate (Führungszeugnis, approx. 15€) to be sent to:

Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin
Cluster of Excellence NeuroCure
Charitéplatz 1
10117 Berlin

Note: You may go to any registration office in Berlin. Bürgeramt addresses and opening hours

2. Local immigration office

After registering your address, apply for a residence/work permit at the local immigration office (Ausländerbehörde). Generally, you will need:

-letter of invitation
-employment offer
-address registration (Anmeldung)
-60 €

Please contact Kimberly Mason for more detailed information or Pamela Glowacki at the Charité Welcome Center.

3. German bank account

The Charité pays salaries via bank wire transfer, so you need a local bank account. Some popular Berlin banks are listed below:

> Berliner Sparkasse
> Berliner Volksbank
> Commerzbank
> Deutsche Bank
> Postbank

4. Health insurance (Krankenkasse)

Health insurance is compulsory in Germany. We recommend you contact a German health insurance company before arriving so that you are covered from the very beginning.

See Health Insurance for more information and options.

Please note: Your chosen insurer will automatically register you with the German social security system. Your social security number (Sozialversicherungsnummer) will appear on your pay statements.

5. Pre-employment exam with company doctor (Betriebsarzt)

Your medical exam should take place before you sign your contract. However, if this is not possible, you must show that you have made an appointment, e.g. by bringing your appointment date/time with you when you sign your contract.

Please contact the Betriebsarzt +49 (0)30 450 570 700 for an appointment.

6. Passport-sized photo

You will need passport-sized photos (loose, not scanned; biometric measurements) for several purposes, including your Charité ID card. Biometric passport-sized photos can be obtained at any photography shop or photo booth.
